This eight core processor with fast clock speed of up to 4.6 GHz is commonly used in top-tier gaming laptops. It is also suitable for mobile workstations and other laptop categories that require high-performance.
Besides the 5900HS, the AMD Ryzen 9 5000 series also includes the similar 5900HX, which can be overclocked to boost performance. However, the HS variant has a lower power consumption of 35 Watts as opposed to 45 Watts. 45 Watts is also a typical power consumption of the Ryzen 7 H series, which are gaming & high-performance processors too, but one level below the Ryzen 9 in the hierarchy.
On the other hand, the common mainstream notebook processors, such as the AMD Ryzen 5 and 7 5000 U series, consume 15 Watts.
The Ryzen 9 5900HS features an integrated AMD Radeon graphics processor. It is an entry-level graphics processor suitable only for light gaming. Laptops with the Ryzen 9 5900HX are typically equipped with dedicated video cards that can handle graphics intensive games much better.

A lot of people hear “Ryzen 9” and expect insane gaming performance no matter what, but in reality the 5900HS is more about balance than brute force. It’s great if you want strong CPU performance in a thinner laptop without crazy heat or fan noise, but the integrated Radeon graphics definitely limit it for heavier games.
I also think it’s useful to look at how this kind of efficiency-focused design compares to newer high-end CPUs overall.
