The Ryzen 5 5500U belongs to AMD’s 2021 5000 U lineup together with slower Ryzen 3 5300U, as well as faster Ryzen 7 5700U and 5800U.

Hi, the main goal here is to cover the most used laptop processors, and the Ryzen 5 5600U isn’t among them currently. The 5500U is way more used. Nevertheless, we’ll cover it soon. Until then, you can expect it to be slightly faster than the 5500U. The 5600U has the same number of cores, slightly faster clock speeds, and bigger cache. Although it is in the same Ryzen 5 5000 lineup, it is based on newer CPU architecture.

What is meant by “AMD Radeon Graphics”? Is there no more specific name like “AMD Radeon RX Vega 8”? Or is “AMD Radeon Graphics” a specific graphics chip?

Hi, they removed the Vega version naming from the processors’ specs and now officially call all of them Radeon Graphics. However, these Radeon Graphics integrated graphics processors do differ, depending on the main processor model. For instance, Radeon in the Ryzen 5 5500U has 7 computing units / cores, whereas Radeon in the Ryzen 7 5700U has 8.

Yes, I am confused about the naming of their integrated gpus, they only say Radeon TM (HD), frequency and number of cores. Can’t really find a benchmark for these ‘new’ gpus. It will be difficult to benchmark them in future if they don’t have numbers in the name.

Hi, the Radeon Vega RX 7 GPU is built into the Ryzen 5 5500U CPU. AMD officially calls it and GPUs in other Ryzen 5000 series CPUs simply AMD Radeon Graphics. The RX 7 is one of the Radeon Graphics variants.

This can be described as mid-range video editing performance. It’s not as slow as low-end laptop CPUs like the Intel Pentiums or AMD Athlons, but also not as fast as the H-series Intel Core and H-series AMD Ryzen chips. The H series you can typically find in gaming laptops are a good choice for video editing, especially if you do high-res videos like 4K. The 5 5500U is decent for that, but the H series would perform better, especially during video exports and rendering.

Hi, these two configurations are very similar in terms of performance for the daily computing tasks as well as heavier duties like video editing. The main benefit of the 2nd option is that the MX330 has its own video memory of 2GB so it doesn’t use the main RAM for graphics rendering purposes. This can be very beneficial if you have 8GB RAM, but not so much if you have 16GB. Also the MX330 may give some extra graphics / gaming performance, especially if it’s a higher-power version of the MX330. There are 12W and 25W versions of the video card, with the latter providing better performance but also consuming more battery. Unfortunately, laptop specifications usually don’t list what version of the MX330 is included.
