The AMD A6-9220 and A6-9225 (7th Gen) are lower-end processors (CPU) for laptop PCs. The dual-core CPUs are used mostly in affordable notebook models. Performance-wise, the A6-9220 and A6-9225 are one level above basic CPUs, such as dual-core Intel Celeron or AMD E. On the other hand, the A6-9220 / A6-9225 are a level below the most popular (but pricier) mainstream notebook chips – the Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 U-series. This means the A6 chips are a good yet inexpensive solutions for the regular daily computing tasks, like web browsing, media playback, or work in productivity-oriented apps. But, they will start to lag behind the Intel Core i-series as soon as you throw something more demanding on them, like editing videos or high-resolution photos.

Differences between the A6-9220 and A6-9225 are minor. They have slightly different CPU and graphics clock speeds. The CPU part of the 9220 runs at 2.5 GHz base speed with bursts of up 2.9 GHz, while on the 9225 these speeds are 2.6 GHz and 3.1 GHz, respectively. This difference isn’t noticeable in the daily computing activities. As for graphics, the integrated Radeon R4 in the 9220 and 9225 is clocked at 655 MHz and 686 MHz, respectively, which is not a big gap.

        AMD A6-9220 / A6-9225 Benchmark

        AMD A6-9220 A6-9225 Benchmark

Regarding graphics performance, the Radeon R4 integrated graphics is a basic gaming solution. It is better than integrated graphics of the entry-level CPUs and similar to integrated graphics of the Intel Core i chips.

Also, these AMD A6 chips and Intel Core i3, i5, i7 U series have the same power consumption of 15 Watts.

What is the maximum RAM AMD A6-9225 can support? Also, Would it be able to support 2* 4gb DDR4 RAM modules?

According to AMD, it is 8 GB, but only single channel, so one SODIMM only.

No, it isn’t, unfortunately. Just like the most of laptop CPUs on the market, the A6-9220 is soldered onto the motherboard.

Hi. Can I have a question?
I just need an everyday laptop so as in the description but I already purchased a HP 15.6” with Intel Celeron N4000. It’s still in the box, I was just wondering if is it worth to change it to the amd a6-9220 14” as they on the offer with the same price. Many thanks.

Hi, the N4000 and A6-9220 are very similar performance-wise. The N4000 is a bit faster in benchmarks with 26 User Benchmark points versus 22. So, I can’t recommend getting the one with the A6-9220.

If there’s AMD Ryzen 3 or 5 (or Intel Core i3) option available for a little bit of extra cash, it can be a better choice. But the A6-9220 isn’t.

For almost a year, I have run the A6-9225 along with the Tumbleweed operating system in an HP laptop.

Due to good performance, there are no disturbances or problems until then.

                              Love this product!

Yes….Up to 20Gb, But u should check the ram slot….
Low end laptop provide only 1 slot for ram.In that case u should buy only 16gb ram.

Hi, zoom isn’t demanding, since it requires a single core 1GHz processor or higher and the A6 9225 is dual core at 2.6 GHz. They recommend dual-core 2Ghz or higher. The caveat is that in Zoom’s system requirements they say that “dual and single core laptops have a reduced frame rate when screen sharing (around 5 frames per second)”.

Unless you specifically require this laptop model for any reason, do not buy it. Invest 10% more in laptop with a better processor. AMD does great HW but A6 has really poor performance. I am not sure why they write it is good for web browsing because my 6 years old laptop (at the time USD 1000) loads webpages faster than this thing. If you plan on spending more than 2 hours a week on a laptop or if you wish to keep this device for longer than 2 years, buy something with Ryzen or i3/i5/i7 instead, NOT A (my version is 9225).

Hi Andreas, I am wondering what is your configuration. I have this laptop brand new – Lenovo S145 with 8 GB DDR4 RAM, AMD A6 9225 and 512 GB SSD – and it is incredibly slow. I blame the processor because other specs look good. This laptop is really sluggish and loads webpages slow. I have an old laptop with i7 4500U and it loads pages like four times faster. It is terrible at running Windows apps though, they mostly just crash or not even load which is not really a problem on this Lenovo. Thank you!

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 22 Model 3275 AIO. It has the AMD A6-9225 in it. My ten year old laptop is faster than this. I was told not to buy a Dell because they are crap. I guess it’s true. My question is: What can I upgrade the Processor to? I have already upgraded the RAM. It came with 4GHz and I have upgraded it to 16GHz but the computer is just too slow so I need to upgrade my Processor. Thank you for any advice.

Unfortunately, the A6-9225 isn’t upgradeable. It’s soldered onto the motherboard. It’s good you upgraded RAM, but there are no major benefits of that if you don’t run many programs at the same time and exceed 4GB of RAM usage. What could help is to upgrade your storage if you have a hard drive in the computer. Upgrading the hard drive to a solid state drive would make a big difference for sure, especially when booting up Windows and starting programs. The A6 processor is an entry-level one, that’s true, but hard drives are usually the biggest bottlenecks of modern computers with it.

I needed something cheap that had it all.. Screen,cpu,storage,webcam,mic.. ect so we had one machine here at the office that can do Zoom meetings and things like that. Ended up with an upgraded Dell all-in-one running this SoC and my thoughts..

Really slow to start. Ie.. you click and everything has some lagg to it. Like I said though, this is a work machine and functionality over speed. The CPU can do well with Web browsing and light app usage.. Like OpenOffice or something similar it will do fine. Gaming or anything like that would be laughable, this is built for very lightweight tasks. Worth the upgrade because it got me current.. win 10, webcam, mic, ect.. all for $700.

Michal is getting better performance because he is running a version of Linux, not Windows. Linux tends to work better than Windows on lower level hardware.
As regards your old laptop, it shouldn’t crash Windows apps no matter what its specs are. That probably indicates you need to back up your personal files, then have it wiped and reloaded with Windows 10. Windows computers, in practice, have to be wiped and reloaded every few years to continue to work properly.

These are within my budget. Which one of these would be a good choice??

My AMD a6-9220 had two slots with one 4gig ram and added additional 8gig but believe allowed additional 9.30 g of physical memory. it seems to be running WOW just fine with 12gigs.

I constantly have to reload the operating system. My house runs 14Mbs but this computer stutters in a movie. The other computers, NEVER have a problem. I pulled all the apps off and it still is a total dog. The documentation is awful too. I will not buy another Dell, but I suspect that this is the lemon that they just should never have released.
